TANZANIA DESTINATIONS IN THE MIDST OF THE GREAT MIGRATION – TREASURES IN THE NORTH OF TANZANIA
The national parks and nature reserves in the north of the country are Tanzania’s best known because of their impressive landscapes and wildlife. Who hasn’t heard of the famous Serengeti National Park with the thousands of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles migrating throughout the plains. Or the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact caldera with some of the highest predator density in all Africa. The Northern Tanzania destinations are also frequently visited due to their relatively easy access, although sometimes via bumpy or, more charmingly called, African massage roads. All of the highlights listed here can be combined as a round trip or taken as a one-way route from Arusha with a connecting flight from one of the parks to other destinations.
(ON THE WAY TO) THE COAST
The coastal regions, especially the beach destinations of Tanzania, are recommended for those who would like to relax after their safari. Several coastal towns can be reached by plane from Arusha. If you want to do more local activities or discover historical sights, there are several options both en route and on the coast. These can either be combined as a one-way trip from Arusha or with a flight and local transportation.
TANZANIA VACATION WITH A DIFFERENCE – THE UNTOUCHED AND GREEN IDYLL IN THE WEST OF TANZANIA
Tanzania’s western national parks are far less well-known than the Serengeti and its peers in the north of the country. However, they promise equally extraordinary experiences and the opportunity to discover animals that cannot be seen in the north. The chimpanzees of Tanzania and the pioneering work of Jane Goodall in Gombe Stream National Park are particularly worth mentioning here. In addition, the least visited Katavi National Park with its impressive herds of hippos and buffaloes and the rare roan and sable antelopes can be found on a safari in the west. The deepest and second largest lake in Africa is also found here – Lake Tanganyika, which is up to an impressive 1,470 meters deep. Due to its location and accessibility, you have the chance to enjoy a Tanzania safari away from the crowds in an idyllic green setting on your safari vacation in the west of the country. Adventurers and individual tourists get their money’s worth here.
ADVENTURE GUARANTEED – TANZANIA’S SOUTHERN DESTINATIONS
Ruaha National Park, Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve), Mikumi National Park and Udzungwa National Park are the most rewarding places in the south of the country. All areas can be reached by plane from Dar Es Salaam and less frequently from Arusha. With the exception of Ruaha, they can also be reached relatively easily by car from Dar Es Salaam. Together with Udzungwa, Mikumi is one of the smaller parks of the four and you can see common Tanzanian wildlife as well as the rare sable antelope and wild dog. Udzungwa, on the other hand, is a paradise for hikers with its forest and mountain scenery, beautiful waterfalls and endemic plants and animals such as the Udzungwa colobus monkey and the Sanje black mangabey. Since its expansion in 2008, Ruaha has become Tanzania’s largest national park. In addition to large herds of elephants, buffalo and predators such as lions, wild dogs and leopards, you can spot the rarer roan and sable antelopes as well as large and small kudu. All of these species can also be seen in the Selous Game Reserve, albeit on an area that is more than twice as large as Ruaha National Park at just under 55,000 square kilometers. You can also observe wild animals in Selous on foot during a guided hike and from a boat.
