In Tanzania’s third largest national park, you can experience game drives in completely untouched and remote areas. Covering an area more than ten times the size of Vienna, there are countless discoveries to be made. The main attractions of Katavi include large herds of hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffalo and various water birds due to the abundant water resources. The latter are mainly seen during the rainy season until the beginning of the dry season. At the end of the dry season, the elephant and buffalo herds gather with giraffes, zebras and various gazelles along the Katuma River, which is increasingly short of water. Cats of prey such as lions, cheetahs and leopards as well as spotted hyenas can also be found near the river in search of easy prey. At the same time, there are more and more hippos in a small area in the more limited water resources, which is why you can often witness turf wars between the mighty bulls. The rare roan and sable antelopes are shy and like to hide in the large miombo woodlands, but their graceful appearance is still well worth seeing. You can reach the park by charter flight from various directions or by safari car after a long journey.
